JONATHAN Framp may be the only man in his Zumba class, but he is so taken with this Latin-inspired exercise that he is organising a Zumbathon.
The three-hour fundraising marathon will take place on Saturday, April 28, at Reigate Methodist Church's community centre.
The dancers hope to raise enough money to repay the loans used to build the centre.
"It is a great fun way to keep fit and lose weight," said Jonathan, of South Nutfield, who attends classes with his 14-year-old daughter, Emma.
"This is an opportunity for the community to get to know its centre, but the whole point is to have some fun.
"You can have a cup of tea and a piece of cake and then work it off – it is great exercise."
Jonathan, 44, used to do ballroom and Latin dancing with his wife before they had children, but he had not danced for 15 years until the official opening of the community centre last year.
"I was cooking the burgers and hot dogs that day and I noticed this thing Zumbathon being advertised," he said.
"I was in the middle of trying to lose weight, and it was at a convenient time so my daughter and I started going with a friend of mine and her daughter.
"I am the only guy in my class but I don't care – I am keeping fit and having fun."
Jonathan is hoping that the event will create more local interest in the community centre and lead to further lettings, which it needs to repay its loans. Our instructors will host the Zumbathon, which will start at 1pm with a half-hour warm-up and light dance, suitable for children as well as adults.
Dancers exercise in a line to a soundtrack of Latin, Bollywood, disco and chart music.
"Proper Zumba is not for kids – it is quite full on – but everybody does it to their own ability," said Jonathan.
"You push yourself to your limit and you will get what you need from it."
Entry fee is £5 per adult for all or part of the Zumbathon, and £2 for children joining the warm-up dance session. The community centre's Hub Café will open all afternoon to provide refreshments.
