Gatwick Airport's runway was closed this afternoon after a plane's tyre burst on take-off.

According to information available on the Flight Radar website and dedicated Twitter accounts, an Air Canada Rouge flight burst a tyre taking off and declared an emergency.

The plane dumped fuel while circling before making an emergency landing at Gatwick.

The runway was closed for a brief time after the flight took off, at around 1.15pm, while officials at the airport checked for debris from the blowout.

It was reopened so the plane could land but has now reportedly been closed again after the stricken plane landed, while precautionary checks are made.

The incident is having an impact on a number of other flights which are being delayed and diverted.

A statement posted on Gatwick Airport's website at 2.31pm states: "An Air Canada Rouge flight to Toronto returned to Gatwick after experiencing a burst tyre on take-off. The aircraft has landed but our runway is closed to allow for a runway inspection, as is standard procedure in these circumstances."

UPDATE: Shortly after 3pm the runway was open again but Gatwick Airport's management have told people to expect delays to continue.

This video of an aborted landing at Gatwick was filmed in March this year.
