Surrey has been left with only one Michelin-starred restaurant after two eateries dropped off the list and another came in as a new entry.

Twenty new national Michelin-starred restaurants were unveiled at the first-ever live launch of the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland on Monday (October 3), including Egham’s The Tudor Room at Great Fosters Hotel .

The venue, which received one star, is now Surrey’s only restaurant with the accolade after Drake’s in Ripley and The Latymer in Pennyhill Park were both stripped of theirs.

The Tudor Room is headed up by Douglas Balish who joined the hotel in 2014.

Originally from Scotland, his "obsession" with food started as a child and has continued to develop every since.

A spokesman for Great Fosters said: “Unashamedly modest, Dougie has worked in some of the best restaurants in the UK and as far afield as Australia, chasing experience and knowledge of food rather than money.

“He loves a busy restaurant and is rewarded by delighted customers eating great food.”

Drake’s restaurant previously had one star. Chef Steve Drake stepped down at the end of August after a settlement in his divorce meant he lost co-ownership of his flagship establishment.

It will continue to be run by his former wife, Serina.

Mr Drake has plans to open a new restaurant in Surrey and he continues to run the Anchor, also in Ripley, which is one of 24 new establishments to receive a Bib Gourmand - Michelin’s award for good value, good quality cooking.

The Latymer made the Sunday Times Top 100 restaurants list in 2015, coming 58th, and last summer chef Michael Wignall retained the restaurant’s Michelin star after less than a year at the helm.

Matt Worswick, the restaurant’s current chef, took over from Mr Wignall earlier this year.

Drake’s and The Latymer have been contacted for a quote.
